How can I keep my horse from getting sick?

Prevention and a proactive health care plan are the best ways to keep your horse strong and free from any diseases. Specifically, make sure that they are properly vaccinated. At the minimum, your horse should receive their rabies, tetanus and EWT/WN (Eastern and Western Encephalitis, Tetanus, and West Nile Virus) vaccines at least once per year. There are several other vaccines that we can recommend for your horse, depending on their lifestyle. For example, horses who travel a lot may need certain vaccines that others do not. Aside from this, maintaining a clean and “biosecure” environment for your horse can help prevent the spread of disease. Some of the precautions you can take are to: use dedicated stable equipment for each horse, avoid sharing water between horses, ventilate your stables, limit the number of horses on a yard, keep younger horses away from older ones, and quarantine horses that are suspected to have a disease or infection.

What are signs that my horse is sick or unwell?

First of all, the best way to detect sickness in your horse is to take them to our veterinary team for regular exams. Aside from checking for visible signs of illness, diagnostic tests can be conducted during these consultations to check for any underlying conditions.
